Dear H-Islamart list: I've come across many references to masons' marks in Middle Eastern architecture in the context of Crusader, (Cilician) Armenian, Rum Seljuk and Artuqid monuments. However, I've skimmed through Yasser Tabbaa's Constructions of Power and Piety, and Terry Allen's Ayyubid Architecture without finding any reference to them. Is it possible that they had fallen out of use by then? Btw, I think I've found most of the obvious bibliography on the use of masons' marks in medieval Middle Eastern architecture, but if anyone thinks I may have missed something, I'd be glad to be enlightened. with best wishes, Linda Wheatley-Irving Chicago
