On the first day of our Introduction to Women and Gender Studies class we do an exercise that we've done for the past 6 or 7 years... I hand out a sheet of paper with the following question: Think of a pivotal experience that made you aware of the construction of gender in your own life. Use details to describe a specific incident or two. It could be either a positive (empowering) incident, or negative (discriminatory, hurtful) incident. We give them five minutes to write an answer and then we go around the room and share. I always go first to set them at ease. Not only does it get them thinking of the issues we'll be covering, but it has turned out to be a wonderful "getting to know you" kind of exercise. Finally, we've learned a lot about our students and seen some shifts in the population--for instance, more and more of our students live in a household where their mother works outside the home and their father stays home with the children.
