Sent: 29 November 2012 04:11 I would like to propose a panel for the upcoming (22-25 May 2014, Toronto) Berkshire Conference on Women's History to examine the intertwined histories of homosexuality and consumer capitalism. This may include work on queer consumers and consumer practices, scholarship on business enterprise and its relationship with homosexuality, or the queer uses and meanings of consumer goods/acts/services etc. among others. These may focus on either/both underground economies and mainstream consumer activities/business practices or the relationship between the two. My own paper will look at the history of the Pink Pound in the UK, including not only how advertisers, marketers and business interests sought to attract and target queer consumers, but also how they commercially used the subject of homosexuality and homosexuals for profitable ends. While my work focuses on the history of twentieth-century Britain (and I welcome other Europeanists), I am also interested in including papers from outside Europe and North America including sites of empire, the global south, transnational or diasporic communities. In addition to co-panelists, I am also interested in hearing from scholars interested in acting as chair or commentator for this panel.
