Sent: 23 November 2012 09:12 Hera, there is no research on this that I know of; a search on Index Islamicus for "pubic hair" returns nothing. It's based on a hadith (a report of the Prophet Muhammad), so ideas about it likely began circulating quite early. This is for a me a lived experience thing; in Central Asia, one does not undress in front of others, generally speaking, so there's little chance of observing this sort of thing. There, shaving is something that adults (of both genders) are expected to do, the way women in the US shave armpits and legs, rather than a one-time event. Body hair is generally frowned upon; I was even asked once if I didn't want to wax my arms, which seemed too hairy for my (now) sister-in-law. I've asked a few Muslims from outside of Central Asia who have confirmed it, but it's merely anecdotal, and corrupted by being in the US. Sorry I can't be of more help. ______________________________________ Vika Gardner, PhD 460 Park Ave Meadville. PA
