I consider this a social construction and a pathologising/disempowering one at that. Heroin is an addiction. Sex/ gambling etc are often pathologised in this way but in my opinion it is using the word "addiction" metaphorically. They are not addictions in the same way as a physical dependency. Of course it is possible to use sex/.computer games/collecting matchboxes, or anything else as an unhealthy avoidance of other issues but regarding these habits as addictions is really not helpful. Rant over.
