Sent: 03 October 2012 17:25 Your student might want to look at some of the people who have been considered from other perspectives who could make interesting subjects for transgender histories. "Cross dressers" Boulton and Park are discussed by Matt Cook (2003), Harry Cocks (2003) and Charles Upchurch (2000) in the context of male same-sex histories. The title of Julie Wheelwright's 'Amazons and Military Maids: Women who dressed as men in pursuit of life, liberty and happiness' (1989) shows its roots in women's history, but could be used to develop trans histories. If you are interested in intersex histories, I would second the recommendation for Geertje Mak's 'Doubting Sex' (2012) and also suggest Richard Cleminson and Francisco Vásquez García's 'Hermaphroditism, Medical Science and Sexual Identity in Spain, 1850-1960' (2009) Best, Clare Tebbutt PhD Student University of Manchester
