Call for Panelist, SHEAR St. Louis 2013 Panel Title: Tying and Untying the Knot: Marriage, Family, and Divorce in the Early Republic Panel Organizers: Emily Arendt, PhD Candidate, The Ohio State University Department of History and Jacqueline Beatty, PhD Student, George Mason University, Department of History and Art History We are seeking a third panelist for a panel on family and marriage/divorce in the Early American Republic for the 2013 SHEAR Conference to be held in St. Louis (July 18-21, 2013). We are interested in looking at public ideas about marriage and marital strife c. 1780-1810. One paper currently slated for our panel looks at elopement notices in Pennsylvania newspapers to understand the significance of the public forum of marriage, especially after the liberalization of the PA divorce law in 1785. The second paper examines gender antagonism, as evidenced by depictions of husband/wife relationships frequently presented in almanacs. If interested, please send a short abstract and contact information by October 10, 2012 to Emily Arendt at arendt.16@osu.edu<mailto:arendt.16@osu.edu>.
