Sent: 09 July 2011 02:04 The Red Butterfly (TRB) was a Marxist cell of the New York Gay Liberation Front (1969-1971). Although its members were diverse, TRB constituted a radical intelligentsia within GLF, concerned with developing theory of gay liberation and linking it to other movements for social change. The Red Butterfly produced four mimeographed pamphlets: the first, *Gay Liberation*, published on 13 February 1970, went through several printings -- thousands of copies were sold in only a few months. The second pamphlet was a reprinting of Carl Wittman's *A Gay Manifesto*, with comments by The Red Butterfly. The third was *Gay Oppression: A Radical Analysis*. The fourth was my translation of a 1928 speech by the German philosopher, Kurt Hiller: *"Appeal to the Second International Congress for Sexual Reform for the Benefit of an Oppressed Variety of Human Being"*. From time to time I get requests for information on The Red Butterfly, or for copies of the pamphlets, which have been out-of- print for decades. In response, I have now (finally!) put the pamphlets on my personal website -- in pdf form, and for two pamphlets, also in html. Also included is a position paper, *Critique of the "Gay Demands"*, which TRB took to the second Black Panther Party convention, held in Washington, D.C. on 27-29 November 1970.
