Leo Baeck Fellowship Programme A programme of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation) in cooperation with the Stiftung "Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft" and the Leo Baeck Institute, supported by the Stiftung ”Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft“, the Alfred Freiherr von Oppenheim Stiftung, the Fritz von Thyssen Stiftung and the Robert Bosch Stiftung. Aims This fellowship programme intents to foster research on the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry in Central Europe and in exile. The scholarships enable the fellows to conduct their research both at home and at research institutes and archives abroad. Regular exchange with other scholars in the field is encouraged through seminars and aims at creating an international network of young scholars in this academic field. Conditions * There are a maximum of 10 PhD scholarships and 2 postdoctoral scholarships available for the academic year 2008/9. * The research project of the candidate should focus on the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry in Central Europe and in exile. * Academic excellence * The latest university degree should not date back further than 3 years to the date of application. Schedule The fellowships run from October 2008 to September 2009. In addition to the grant, fellows are invited to present their work and to discuss the results of their research. The spoken languages of the seminars are German and English. Application Application sets (3 printed copies) should contain: * completed application form (available on homepage) * a statement of purpose * a CV, giving details about education and any information the applicant considers relevant, e.g. language skills * a copy of the university degree or degrees * an outline of the research project, maximum 5 pages * a time schedule for the academic year 2008/9, including prospective research visits * a reference from the supervisor (does not apply for postdoctoral applicants) * a second reference by a university teacher or scholar The deadline of application is February 1, 2008. Promising candidates will be invited for interviews in Bonn from April 6 to 8, 2008. Financial Details The scholarships for PhD students are € 1,000 per month in Europe, € 1,200 in the UK and in Israel, € 1,400 in the US. Postdoctoral students receive € 1,500, € 1,800 (UK, IL), € 2,100 (US). All fellows receive a travel grant of € 1,000.
