To: H-ASIA@h-net.msu.edu Comment on review on _China or Japan: Which Will Lead Asia? (review posted on August 15/cross-post from H-Diplo) ***************************************************************** From: Sumit Guha <sguha@history.rutgers.edu> Dear colleagues, As Oros's review of Meyer's book posted on H-ASIA made a number of international comparisons between Japan, China, India and the rest of the world, I thought it might be useful for us to look at comparative international data as of last year. I have compiled it from the CIA World Factbook, which I take to be a dependable source on matters unrelated to weapons of mass destruction. At Purchasing Power Parity, 9 economies exceed $2 trillion (omitting the EU but counting its major members.) These are: 1. USA $15.3 Trillion 2. China $11.4 3. India $ 4.5 4. Japan $ 4.5 5. Germany $ 3.1 6. Russia $ 2.4 7. Brazil $ 2.3 8. U.K. $ 2.3 9. France $ 2.2 10.Italy $ 1.8 11.Mexico $ 1.7 12.Korea(S ) 1.6 ******************************************************** At official exchange rates the ranks change significantly. But it is often thought that PPP is a better measure since international exchanges can vary sharply with capital movements and oil prices and some countries such as China are known to control exchange rates. But for comparison, I also give the relative sizes in official or market dollar values as well. (Trillion $ at official or market exchange rates of 2011) 1. USA $15.1 2. China $ 7.3 3. Japan $ 5.9 4. Germany $ 3.6 5. France $ 2.8 6. Brazil $ 2.5 7. UK $ 2.4 8. Russia $ 1.9 9. Canada $ 1.7 10.India $ 1.7 11.Australia$ 1.5 12.Spain $ 1.5 Sumit Guha Rutgers University
