Soviet casualties: from Soviet Casualties and Combat Losses in the Twentieth Century Colonel-General G.F. Krivosheev, transalation, Greenhill Books, 1997, ISBN: 1853672807. p.282, Table 105, Casualty Figures for Soviet Personnel in Local Wars and Military Conflicts. Vietnam, July 1965-December 1974, 16 killed (15 of whom were officers). In http://www.oneworld.org/ips2/mar99/07_35_037.html and "Missile Ambushes: Soviet Air Defense Aid", Vietnam, August 2001, p. 26-32, the author, Sergei Blagov, mentioned Nikolai Kolesnik, head of Russian Vietnam War Veterans Union. An article in the New York Times of April 14, 1989 (p.A13) mentioned that Soviet soldiers sent to North Vietnam as anti-aircraft technicians took part in missile-launching combat and shot down U.S. aircraft with surface-to-air missiles. The article also stated that Soviet Vietnam war veterans annually gather on March 5 near Moscow. Sergei Blagov worked for the Institute of Oriental and African Studies of Moscow University, maybe at the Centre for Vietnamese Studies. http://www.iaas.msu.ru/dep_e/dep6.html Mr. Blagov was also the correspondent for TASS News Agency in Vietnam in the 1980s.
