The Fall 2004 edition of the Center for Research Libraries' Focus newsletter outlines efforts by the Center and its network to promote nationwide action to ensure the survival of critical heritage materials in print form. Building Blocks of a National Print Preservation Network The "Building Blocks" forum was convened by the Center in April 2004 for the exchange of information on print archiving and collections of last resort activities. This issue of Focus reports progress in four important areas: news archiving, government publications, journals, and digital delivery of collections of record. News Archiving - Recent and ongoing efforts under the International Coalition on Newspapers (ICON) program to meet the challenges posed to newspaper libraries by recent economic and technological changes. Government Publications - The Government Printing Office plan to ensure no-fee permanent public access to the official publications of the U.S. government, and the "Decision Framework" developed to support this initiative. Journals - The Center's collaboration with on three key journal archive projects -JSTOR, distributive archiving, and emerging shared print initiatives. Digital Delivery of Collections of Record - Recent Center planning on linking archiving and access through development of on-demand electronic delivery of legacy collections.
