Just a note on Dmitri Volkogonov's conversion: in his own works, he has indicated that his turn against the Soviet system began when he worked on the Stalin biography, for which he was given unprecedented archival access. He admits that he was an ardent communist, and even after 1991 regarded the fall of the USSR "with grief." Having read many of his personal papers archived at the LOC, I find no reason to believe that this belief in communism, and his eventual revulsion at Soviet crimes against the Soviet people and consequent rejection of the Soviet system, were anything but genuine.
