Dear Colleague, On behalf of the Organising Committee, we cordially invite you to attend the 6th Biennial Conference of the International Froebel Society, taking place from Thursday 26th to Saturday 28th June 2014 at Canterbury Christ Church University, Canterbury, England. Bringing together individuals and groups who share interests in enhancing learning and development through play, the conference will feature a series of key note lectures, oral presentation, poster, discussion and workshop sessions. A practitioners' conference will run in parallel at the same venue on the last day of the conference. The International Froebel Society (IFS) and Canterbury Christ Church University seek to provide an international forum for the development of the principles of educational theory and practice associated with the child-centred philosophy of Friedrich Froebel. Selected papers will be considered for publication after the conference. Conference theme The theme of the conference is "Play, Self-activity, Representation and Development". The recent significant growth in the recognition of the importance of children's play is arguably the most indicative sign of the maturity of the area of play research. It suggests that the area's broad contours, refined over several generations of scholarship, enjoy the approval of practitioners. Although play science experiences authority, the public discourses around children's play feature misunderstandings, errors and ambiguity, and open up spaces for researchers to explore. It requires an elaboration of more complex frameworks and models. The conference invites examinations of play through different disciplinary lenses - sociological, psychological, anthropological, political and pedagogical. Topics include, but are not restricted to: 1. Promoting the child's right to play Child's agency in games Politics of play Risk and play Patriarchy and play Children and commodity culture 2. Play culture in the changing world Play, games and virtual worlds Play in the classroom; Parent-child play interactions; Video games and violence 3.
