Does anyone know of work done on the transition from the use of "it" to the use of "he/she" as the main pronoun for "child"? I'd be interested in scholarship from any linguistic context, though I am primarily interested in the issue from a medical or scientific perspective (i.e., when/why this transition occurs in medical and scientific literature).
