American History” at the OAH 2013 Call for panellists: “Consumer Activism in Twentieth Century North American History” at the OAH 2013 I’m interested in putting together a panel on twentieth-century consumer activism--focusing on consumer activism as a means of making political change--for the OAH Annual Meeting in San Francisco in April 2013. The precise focus of the panel will depend upon the interests of the participants. I am planning to put in a proposal for a paper that will draw on my PhD thesis (which I’m defending in January), entitled “‘A Consumers’ War’: Price Control and Political Consumerism in the United States and Canada during World War II.” It analyzes the transnational yet distinct efforts of American and Canadian consumer activists to empower consumers as a pivotal, democratizing force in the political economy of consumer capitalism during and immediately following World War II. Potential topics could include such things as the formation of consumer organizations, consumer movement lobbying campaigns, boycotting (from campaigns with a local focus to ones with a transnational focus), buycotting (buying American/buying Canadian, union label campaigns, fair trade, green consumerism), and so on. If you are interested in participating in the panel, particularly as a presenter, please send me an email indicating your interest and, preferably, a brief description of the topic of the paper you wish to propose. The deadline for proposals for the OAH 2013 is February 15, so I would like to have the formal proposals in hand before the end of January in order to get the panel proposal submitted in advance of the deadline.
