Conference DIRECTIONS WEST: THIRD BIENNIAL WESTERN CANADIAN STUDIES CONFERENCE University of Calgary, Calgary, AB June 21-23, 2012 The Directions West Conference invites submissions of papers, panels, and roundtables that address the many directions people have traveled--geographically, imaginatively, socially, creatively, intellectually, historically--to create the West, as lived experience, and as constructed and contested in human imagination. People have moved into and through the West for millennia, sometimes settling, sometimes sojourning, and sometimes returning home. We invite submissions that interrogate those journeys. How have various people mapped their ways into and through the North American Wests? How have we/they mapped this place as home, as politically bounded space, as borderland, as colony? And how have these journeys and templates intersected, collided, and collaborated in the meetings among First Nations and the women and men of diverse ethnicities and cultures who converged to shape the western social landscapes? The West has represented many things: promise, hope, exploitable resource, refuge, tourist destination, marketable heritage, home. We conceive of “the West” in broad and unfixed terms. Conference themes traverse and confront traditional boundaries of western studies to include multiple environments: urban and rural, shield, semi-arid grassland, cordilleran mountain ranges, the Pacific Coast, and the borderlands of the North American Wests. Directions West connotes individual journeys and the intellectual trajectories of Western Canadian Studies. We hope to bring together people who, from diverse perspectives, can explore this scholarship and its development, and raise pressing questions to explore the most fruitful approaches to inform the future of western Canada and its borderlands. We invite submissions that address these themes, or that suggest new directions to explore western histories, western cultures, and western Canadian studies. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary submissions are welcomed. Directions West will be the third Western Canadian Studies Conference since 2007, when the University of Alberta revived the Western Canadian Studies conferences of the 1970s and 1980s, followed by the University of Manitoba in 2010. In 2012, we return to the University of Calgary where the Western Canadian Studies conferences of the 1970s originated. Please submit one-page proposals and a one-page vita for each presenter by September 15, 2011 to dnswest@ucalgary.ca. -- Nancy Janovicek Associate Professor Department of History University of Calgary 2500 University Drive NW Calgary, AB T2N 1N4 Tel: (403)220-6403 Fax: (403)289-8544
