Rielís Defence: A conference devoted to Louis Rielís speeches at his trial for high treason, 1885 October 28 - 30, 2010 University of Windsor This year marks the 125th anniversary of the trial of Louis Riel for high treason. At his trial Riel gave two remarkable speeches, which are of great cultural significance for Canadians, one before, and one after the juryís deliberations. This two-day conference will consider Rielís speeches from a number of perspectives, including the historical, the political, and the rhetorical. The conference aims not only to draw attention to these speeches as a rich resource for study in themselves, but also to add to our understanding of Riel and the circumstances of his trial. Invited Speakers: Maurice Charland, Concordia University Thomas Flanagan, University of Calgary Desmond Morton, McGill University Jennifer Reid, University of Maine The Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric (CRRAR) at the University of Windsor invites proposals for presentations that focus on one or other of Rielís speeches. The proposals (with ĎRielí in the subject line) should be sent to the address below and received by July 15, 2010. H. V. Hansen & C. W.
