[Submitted by Jon Mogul, jon@thewolf.fiu.edu. - ed.] Wolfsonian-FIU Fellowship Program The Wolfsonian-Florida International University is a museum and research center that promotes the examination of modern visual and material culture. The focus of the Wolfsonian collection is on North American and European decorative arts, propaganda, architecture, and industrial and graphic design of the period 1885-1945. The Wolfsonian library has approximately 50,000 rare books, periodicals, and ephemeral items, as well as standard reference materials. The Wolfsonian has rich holdings, in many different formats, of advertising and related material from the United States and Europe. There is an especially strong concentration of travel advertising, in the form of posters, brochures, postcards, matchbooks and other ephemera. Product advertising in The Wolfsonian's holdings includes a collection of several hundred American advertising cards, especially for soap and food products, from the turn of the twentieth century; as well as advertising posters, and advertisements in a variety of periodicals. The Wolfsonian also has a large number of European and American trade catalogs for a range of product types, especially furniture, building materials and printing supplies; and many sample books for paper, textiles, type and other items. Other items in the collection reflecting commercial culture include advertising signs; and periodicals from a number of countries devoted to advertising and graphic design. Fellowships are intended to support full-time research, generally for a period of three to five weeks. The program is open to holders of master's or doctoral degrees, Ph.D. candidates, and to others who have a significant record of professional achievement in relevant fields. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their project with the Fellowship Coordinator prior to submission to ensure the relevance of their proposals to the Wolfsonian's collection. The application deadline is December 31, for residency during the 2008-2010 academic years.
