Professor Evgenii I. Kychanov (22 June 1932 - 24 May 2013) ******************************************************************** From: Kirill Solonin <solonin12@gmail.com> With great sorrow we inform that famous Russian Tangutologist and Sinologist Evgenii Kychanov (22.06.1932 - 24.05.2013) had passed away in St. Petersburg on the 24th of May, 2013 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. Dr. Kychanov's scholarly career lasted for over 50 years and had been marked with a series of outstanding achievements. From the outset, Dr. Kychanov had been primarily concerned with the study of the Tangut history, research of the Tangut original documents and study of the Tangut law. This resulted in the series of publications covering a wide range of issues of the Tangut law, social structure and Tangut history in general, including one of the first monograph studies of the Tangut history. In the process of his research of the Tangut legal system, Dr. Kychanov prepared the first complete Translation of the Tangut Tiansheng Law code, which had become a major breakthrough in the understanding of the Tangut society. Throughout his career, E. I. Kychanov continued painstaking work on cataloging the Tangut collection in St. Petersburg Institute of Oriental Manuscripts. This work culminated in the publication of the Catalog of the Buddhist texts from P. K. Kozlov's collection, the book which remains the major guide for all the students of Tangut Buddhism. E. I Kychanov's final achievement was the publication of his Tangut Dictionary, which emerged in the process of his meticulous research into a wide range of Tangut texts. For a long while he had to combine this work with heavy administrative duties as the Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies in St. Petersburg during the hardest years in its history, His energy secured the survival of the Institute throughout these years and laid foundations for the future growth. Talent never comes alone: E. I. Kychanov was a brilliant writer and author of series of novels about the crucial events in Asian history. Based on the careful research of historical accounts, these novels combined exquisite literary style with the profound knowledge of the described events and persons, starting from the first Tangut Emperor Yuanhao up to the Oirat king Gushe-khan. Throughout his long career, E. I. Kychanov trained many students who are now scattered throughout the world. We are sure that they will join us in our mourning. His knowledge, erudition, willingness to work with the students and charming personality made work with him a pleasure, which no one of us, who had this privilege would ever forget. His status as of a person who gave shape to the Tangut studies as they are today will forever remain unsurpassed. All of us would forever miss our great friend and teacher. Yours sincerely, Kirill Solonin Fo Guang University --------------------------- H-Buddhism (Buddhist Scholars Information Network) Web Site: <http://www.h-net.org/~buddhism/> Posting Guidelines: <http://www.h-net.org/~buddhism/posting_guidelines.html> Handling Your Account: <http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=h-buddhism> --
