John and Chuck: I was privileged to be one of his early students at Tokyo Univ. when doing my masters. His other students include Akira Saito and Masahiro Shimoda, who are now both faculty members in the Dept. of Indian Philosophy at U. of Tokyo. I agree with John that Prof. Takasaki's Nyorozō-shisō no keisei (The Formation of Tathḡatagarbha Thought) is a work of monumental scope and findings, and deserves much more attention. He did receive an award from a prestigious academic group in Japan. When Tathagatagarbha thought was attacked by the "Critical Buddhism" proponents, he did not actively respond (or perhaps I missed much of it for I was in the U.S). I wish he had, for it would have been even more stimulating to the field. Then again, in his intuitive, direct wah (as his name "Jikido" suggests), he understood it was not his place to get involved! The last time I saw him in March of this year, though quite frail, he expressed enormous satisfaction that his 9 volume collection of his life-time work (spanning Indian non-Buddhist thought, Tathagatagarbha, and Dogen), had been published, a fitting tribute to a first-rate scholar, a leader in international Buddhist academic circles, a patient and thoughtful teacher, and a caring family.
