H-ASIA October 30, 1998 Responses (3) to query re: T. Lobsang Rampa ************************************************************************** 1.) From: dunnell@kenyon.edu With reference to the query posted on H-ASIA: The inquirer should read Donald Lopez's book, PRISONERS OF SHANGRI-LA (1998, Univ. of Chicago Press). He has a chapter on this fellow that is essential reading. Ruth Dunnell Kenyon College ************************************************************************** 2.) From: "Nicholas R. Clifford" <clifford@panther.middlebury.edu> There is quite a lot of information on Lobsang Rampa, his background and his influence, in Donald Lopez's new _Prisoners of Shangri-la_ (University of Chicago Press). Not having a copy at hand, I can't repeat it, but little of it, as I remember, is flattering. Nick Clifford Middlebury College clifford@middlebury.edu ************************************************************************* 3.) From: tgrunfeld@sescva.esc.edu Lobsang Rampa was an Irish plumber who lived in Toronto and fantasized about being a Tibetan monk. Stick to books by the Dalai lama, Giuseppe Tucci, Donald Lopez among a host of others who really know what they are talking about. A. Tom Grunfeld SUNY/Empire State College ------- Ed. note: The citation for the Lopez book noted above is: Donald S. Lopez, _Prisoners of Shangri-La : Tibetan Buddhism and the West_ (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1998) ISBN: 0226493105.
