H-ASIA December 23, 2013 CFP SSHA 2014 - Urban Network, Toronto, Canada, November 6-9, 2014 ******** From Brigitte LeNormand <brigitte.lenormand@UBC.CA> Call for Panels and Papers Social Science History Association (SSHA) 2014 – Urban Network Toronto, Canada, November 6-9, 2014 http://www.ssha.org/annual-conference Deadline: 14 February 2014 The Urban Network invites proposals for panels and papers for the 2014 edition of the Social Science History Association conference, which will be held in Toronto from November 6th to the 9th. The members of the Social Science History Association share a common interest in interdisciplinary and systematic approaches to historical research (including, but by no means limited to, sociology, urban planning, geography, demography, economics, and political science.) The theme of the upcoming conference is "Inequalities: Politics, Policy and the Past." Few problems have been more central to the work of social science historians than inequalities—whether our concern has been the social, political, and economic inequalities that divide people in the same country or the vast disparities of wealth, power, and military might that distinguish different countries and even regions of the world. In recognition of these long-standing interests, we seek panel proposals that consider the myriad ways that history, politics, and policy intersect to shape these inequalities, as well as the equally numerous ways that these inequalities intersect to shape the development of history, politics, and policy. For full announcement of conference theme, please go to: http://www.ssha.org/ With this in mind, the urban network invites panels and papers which address the conference theme: - Urban planning and inequality - Racial and ethnic segregation and its implications - The dynamics of gentrification - Understanding homelessness - Spatial dimensions of inequality - Shadow cities, urban marginality, poverty, segregation - Gated communities - Gender and property - The role of institutions in perpetuating or limiting inequality - Rethinking or redefining urban inequality - Changing forms of inequality through history (pre-modern, early modern) In addition, the urban network particularly welcomes panels and papers which address the following topics: 1) Different manifestations of the urban: - Cities of the Global South - Cities of Socialism and Post-socialism - Global cities, diversity in the city - Second Cities, small or mid-sized cities - Boom Towns - The relationship between the urban, suburban and the rural - Studying the city at the micro-level: households, neighborhoods, networks 2) Short-term and Long-term Crisis in the City: - Disasters and Crises in the city - Urban environmental history - Food and the city - Civic spaces and protest - Fear and violence in the city 3) Panels with connections to the host city, including: - Revisiting Richard Florida’s The Creative City and the Creative Class - The “Rob Ford” effect: urban governance in metropolitan regions Other topics are also welcome. To propose paper, panel or discussion table please submit: Paper Title, Brief Abstract, and Contact Information at http://conference.ssha.org/ While we accept individual paper submissions, proposals for whole panels or discussion tables are highly encouraged. Partially organized panels or tables of at least three presenters will also be accepted as network organizers can work to fill out panels with individual submissions where possible. Panels should include an organizer, one or two discussants, and at least four papers. Discussion tables are an alternative panel format and can be organized around a theme for open discussion and debate or bring together scholars wishing to have a more informal discussion based on ongoing research projects. All submissions are due by February 14, 2014. For more information on the meeting, as well as the call for proposals, please refer to the SSHA website: http://www.ssha.org Or: contact either of the Urban network co-chairs, Brigitte Le Normand (brigitte.lenormand@ubc.ca) or Daniel Pasciuti (pasciuti@jhu.edu).
