H-ASIA December 19, 2013 New member introduction and a request ******* From: Michael Perlin <prof.michaelperlin@GMAIL.COM> Dear all: I’m new to this list, and wanted to introduce myself, and also share information about a project I’m working on in case anyone is interested. I’m a professor at New York Law School where, among other things, I am the director of our International Mental Disability Law Reform Project. I teach a course in International Human Rights and Mental Disability Law, write frequently in that area (see e.g., my book, International Human Rights and Mental Disability Law: When the Silenced Are Heard (Oxford University Press, 2011)), and have taught and done advocacy work (and site visit to psychiatric institutions) on all continents. Most of my Asian work has been in Japan, China and Taiwan, but I have also presented papers and done advocacy work in Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong, and have taught as a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Indonesia. I practiced law for 13 years before I became a professor, mostly in the areas of criminal defense and disability rights. This year, I am running a clinical program, Building a Disability Rights Information Center in Asia and the Pacific, an outgrowth of the work I have done with colleagues from Japan seeking to do to create a Disability Rights *Tribunal* for Asia and the Pacific; this is a piece of that (see e.g., my article, *Promoting Social Change in Asia and the Pacific: The Need for a Disability Rights Tribunal to Give Life to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,* 44 Geo. Wash. Int’l L. Rev. 1 (2012)). The purpose of this Clinic is to establish a one-stop-shop for researchers and advocates involved in disability rights in that region via a stand-alone website. Next term, my seven students will statutes, regulations, advocacy efforts and other research in 14 jurisdictions – Japan, Korea, PRC, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Philippines. Here’s my request: if anyone is interested in working with us (by providing information that might not be otherwise easily accessible to those who speak/read only English), could you send me an email, telling me of your work, and whether or not one of my students might be able to contact you during the spring semester for ideas, information, etc. All assistance will be attributed *if* that is wanted. Thanks so much! And I look forward to getting to know other members. Best, Michael Prof. Michael L.
