H-ASIA December 4, 2013 'Herios' ~query *************** From: Gajendra Singh <gajsingh1981@GMAIL.COM> Hello, I'm posting this on behalf of a colleague, Ashok Nath, who doesn't subscribe to H-Asia (sadly). In the 2/128th Pioneers, one of many battalions of the Indian Army raised during the First World War and disbanded in 1920/1921, the 'racial' composition of the battalion was cited as: Pathans, Lobana and Saini Sikhs, 4 platoons of Herios and 2 platoons of Marathas and Meos. Neither I nor Ashok have ever heard of 'Herios' before, and I suspect it is either a spelling mistake or the standard British corruption of the vernacular. Does anyone know precisely who or what 'Herio' refers to?
