H-ASIA December2, 2010 Positions: International Honors Program: Health and Community, Traveling Faculty appointments ************************************************************************ From: H-Net Job Guide: JOB GUIDE NO.: https://www.h-net.org/jobs/job_display.php?id=41875 International Honors Program, Health and Community Program Traveling Faculty, Health and Community Institution Type: College / University Location: Massachusetts, United States Position: Non-Tenure Track Faculty, Visiting Professor The International Honors Program (IHP), a program of World Learning/SIT, offers international, comparative study abroad programs. We are currently seeking traveling faculty members to join an interdisciplinary team of faculty, fellows, and host country coordinators for IHPs Health and Community Programs in Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. Each of the three four-month programs will take approximately 35 students from upper-tier colleges and universities to four countries to explore issues of health and community from a comparative perspective. Tentative itineraries are as follows: Fall 2011 (mid August to mid December): Switzerland, India, China and South Africa. Spring 2012 #1 (early January to early May): USA, South Africa, Vietnam and Brazil Spring 2012 #2 (early January to early May): USA, Argentina, India and Mali The programs are designed for students who wish to study the complex issues of health, community, and globalization from a comparative perspective. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and are typically working towards careers in public/global health, biomedicine, alternative medicine, international and community development and medical anthropology/sociology. The program combines homestays with local families, conventional coursework, guest speakers, site visits, and field-based case studies with community activists, government leaders, and representatives of intergovernmental and non- governmental organizations. IHPs learning model is inquiry-guided and experience-based. We strongly discourage students from bringing laptops, and ask faculty to gear assignments toward having students use the people, organizations and experiences they encounter as resources, in addition to assigned readings. For each of our programs, we are seeking a complementary team of two traveling faculty members who will facilitate learning and each teach two of the following courses (with possible areas of expertise noted): Health and Globalization (expertise in political economy of health and aspects of globalization that affect health, such as health care reform, trade policy, migration, occupational health) Public Health: From Biology to Policy (public health practitioner or researcher, clinical or biological background desirable, epidemiology or related field also desirable) Health, Culture, and Community (medical anthropology or related field) Community Health Research Methods (experience in community-based research, including participatory methods, qualitative and quantitative methods and interdisciplinary approaches) The ideal candidates should have: a) a Ph.D. (or clinical degree/MPH equivalent) in a related field; b) expertise in two of the topic areas listed above and generalist knowledge across several areas of the curriculum; c) experience teaching at the college level and commitment to incorporating alternative (non-didactic) methods of teaching (i.e. methods that promote inquiry- and field-based learning, discussion, and self-reflection); d) research, practice, or consulting experience related to health in some part of the developing world (specific experience in some of the countries in the program desired); e) the physical stamina, psychosocial health, and sensibilities (flexibility, adaptability, collegiality, cross-cultural competence) needed to effectively participate in an intensive, team-oriented study abroad program in multiple countries, and; f) the ability and desire to support students throughout the study abroad experience both in and outside of the classroom. In your letter, please pay special attention to how you believe you would handle the conceptual, pedagogical, intercultural and interpersonal demands of a program like IHPs Health and Community. Qualified fall candidates will be interviewed January 2010 through February 2011, while spring candidates will be interviewed in March and April of 2011. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: What is the compensation? A: Salary is commensurate with experience, typically in the low 30s for the semester-long program, including preparation work before the semester (six-month contract). IHP provides flights, lodging, two meals per day and local transportation, except during a one-week vacation period during the program. Basic accident and sickness insurance is also provided. Q: What is the time commitment? A: This is technically a contracted six-month position, but there is some advance preparation required. Traveling faculty are expected to attend a four or five day planning session over the summer (most likely in May or June). Ongoing course preparation and remote collaboration with country coordinators and Boston staff happens over the course of the summer (for the Fall program) or fall (for the Spring programs). During the program itself, faculty teach two courses each and are expected to attend as many site visits, guest lecture sessions, and colleagues classes as possible so that they are able to help students make connections and relate academic material to experiential components. Weekends are generally free, and there is a week-long vacation about halfway through the program. Candidates should be aware that this is a very intensive program with a full schedule. Faculty must commit to participating in a learning community and be willing to spend time with students outside of the classroom. Q: Can I have visitors or bring my family with me? A: Family members are welcome to visit for periods of time during the program with advance notice. However, due to the nature of the position, it is generally not possible for family members to accompany traveling faculty for the full semester. We typically encourage faculty to limit visits by guests to no more than about two weeks, but can make exceptions under special circumstances. Expenses for guests are not covered by IHP. Q: What are the accommodations like? A: IHP is a program in constant motion, so you will stay in multiple places throughout the semester. Traveling faculty are typically housed in guest houses, simple hotels or homestays (if desired), which are booked by our country coordinators. Whenever possible, we book rooms with wireless internet or nearby access to internet, though connections may sometimes be slow. Phones and SIM cards are provided for in-country calling. Faculty travel with the student group internationally on economy flights and locally by train, bus and public transportation. Q: What kind of support will I have? A: Generally, the traveling leadership team consists of two traveling faculty and a Trustees Fellow. The Trustees Fellow serves multiple roles, including assisting faculty with course preparation, coordinating logistics and acting as a group life facilitator and mentor. In addition, in each country, country coordinators carry out orientations, organize transportation and accommodations, contribute to the academic programming and provide support for both students and the traveling faculty team. Program directors will also be available by phone or email throughout the program to provide support as necessary. It is important that in-country team members share responsibility for the well-being of the group and work collaboratively with each other.
