H-ASIA December 6, 2010 Call for papers: "Re-Orienting Asia: Southern Asian Performance Across Frontiers", Conference on Southern Asian Performance, Pittsburgh, May 12-14, 2011 ************************************************************************ From: "Bose, Neilesh" <Neilesh.Bose@unt.edu> CALL FOR PAPERS Re-Orienting Asia: Southern Asian Performance Across Frontiers University of Pittsburgh Asian Studies Center and Department of Theatre Arts This workshop invites submissions for a one-day symposium that will examine South Asian and Southeast Asian theatre and performance via historical, literary-critical, performance studies-based, and other disciplinary vantage points. The diasporic populations and histories as well as mainland Asian concerns will both be emphasized in this collection. The theme of the conference is the notion of diaspora as reflected in performance traditions, broadly defined as theatre, dance, performance art, and all other varieties of public performance. Possible topics of papers include (but are not limited to): representations of the South Asian diaspora in non-South Asian plays and performances, gender politics in diasporic theatre traditions, representations of the diaspora by South Asian or Southeast Asian playwrights, the history of South Asian-Southeast Asian artistic and theatrical corridors, the relationships between performance and migration to diasporic locations, belonging and cultural identity in diasporic theatre, the role of Islam in Southeast and South Asian theater traditions as well as in contemporary performance practices, and a focus on performance in areas often marginalized in South Asian theatre studies, such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Selected papers in this collection will be submitted for possible publication in a special issue of TDR: The Drama Review on South Asian and Southeast Asian performance traditions.
