H-ASIA December 6, 2010 The Map and Music of Matteo Ricci, Dec.12 at Nantang Cathedral in Beijing [Ed. note: Repeat announcement with performance time confirmed, 7:45 pm] ************************************************************************ From: Ann Waltner <waltn001@umn.edu> Sacabuche, an early music group from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University led by Linda Pearse, and Ann Waltner, professor of history and director of the Institute of Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota, are pleased to invite you to a performance of music and text entitled "The Map and Music of Matteo Ricci." The James Ford Bell Trust has recently acquired a copy of the 1602 map of the world done by Ricci, which now hangs in the Bell Library at the University of Minnesota. Sacabuche specializes inthe music of Ricci's Italian homeland. Huang Ruo, a contemporary composer, has composed new music for the occasion of this collaboration. Ann Waltner and Huang Ruo will read text composed by or about Ricci, and Sacabuche and two Chinese musicians will play music. The performance will be at Nantang (141 Qianmen Xidajie in Beijing), where Ricci preached, at 7:45 p.m. on Dec.12. There is no charge and tickets are not required.
