H-ASIA August 16, 2010 Getting your book reviewed on H-ASIA - supplementary message ************ From: "Sumit Guha" <sguha@history.rutgers.edu> Dear Colleagues, This message is to clarify some issues that have arisen with regard to my earlier message on how members might have their books reviewed on H-ASIA. The original message is pasted in below. Supplementary information: 1. Only books which are sent to the official H-NET review office address as advertised on the H-NET Reviews website can be reviewed. The current address is given below - it has changed in the past and may do so in the future. 2. A book that arrives there is then entered in the database and is available to all list editors, not just H-ASIA. If you want your book to go to H-ASIA, please label it as such AND send an email to hbooks@h-net.mail.msu.edu 3. The database has thousands of entries - for all inquiries quote the correct ISBN of the book. Make sure that the publisher has in fact sent the book, and allow some time to elapse after dispatch. 4. It is the AUTHOR'S responsibility to know the ISBN, which for example differs depending on the whether the hardback or paperback edition was sent to H-NET. Finally, please bear in mind that all editors are unpaid volunteers. Value their time as you would your own. Sincerely, Sumit Guha REVIEW EDITOR, H-ASIA ******************************************************************** [Earlier message follows] I write in my capacity of Book Review Editor for H-ASIA. While my specific charge is South Asia very broadly construed, I do make an effort to get other works - especially those by our members, reviewed. But as the volume of books coming in to the H-NET review office increases, I often discover that books relevant to out list are not brought to my attention and I miss them in the immense number of titles in the database. An excerpt from the official H-Net information for publishers is given below. Please note that books should ***never *** be sent to me or any other editor directly. Only titles that have been entered in the central database can or may be reviewed. If you do arrange for the dispatch of your book to H-net, simultaneously send me an email **with the ISBN** and title so that I may look out for it and reserve it for H-ASIA. Note also that there are some classes of books that H-NET does not review (see below). with best wishes to all our author-members out there! Sumit Guha Reviews Editor Professor of History http://history.rutgers.edu/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=159&Itemid=140 *************************************************************************** Information for Publishers Q: What are your circulation numbers? A: The combined sum of all the H-Net LISTSERV subscriptions exceeds 100,000. In any given week the H-Net web pages are visited a total of over 200,000 times. The reviews archive steadily receives more than 5000 visits per week; 10,000-plus hits in a week is not unusual. Q: Who are your subscribers? A: Our discussion lists began as a consortium of topical discussion lists for history professors, and to this day professors and professional scholars form an important subscriber core. More recently however, H-Net has found an audience among graduate students, librarians, independent scholars, high school teachers, and the educated lay public. You can find a list of our editors in the Editors Directory. Q: How do I get my material reviewed on H-Net? A: H-Net graciously accepts new scholarly works for review consideration. Unless other arrangements have been made, please send books, CD-ROMs, videos, etc. to: H-Net Reviews 406 Natural Science Michigan State University East Lansing, MI 48824-1115 Q: Who decides what is to be reviewed? A: H-Net's review editors are notified of a books availability, if the editors deem it appropriate for their list they find qualified reviewers. To get a sense of the types of works are reviewed, and which lists have been most active, sort the book review index by "List Name." Q: What kinds of materials get reviewed? A: For the most part, monographs, textbooks, reference and teaching materials. Our scope is as wide as our list of discussion networks. We often suggest that publishers use the site's indexing function and try various sorts. Searching by list, for example, will tell you which lists have been most actively reviewing, and perhaps give you a feel for the types of material they prefer. Q: Do any lists specifically review textbooks? A: Yes. Several of our discussion lists are specifically for teachers, instructors, and professors who are interested in reading textbook reviews. H-AfrTeach, H-Survey, H-Teachpol, H-W-Civ, H-High-S, are the most likely candidates. From time to time however, other lists have commissioned reviews on teaching materials. Q: Will I receive a copy of published reviews of my company’s books? A: Yes, our staff sends out notices to publishers within four weeks of their review appearing on H-Net Reviews. Q: Who should I contact if I have a question about a book I submitted for review? A: You should contact our clerks at hbooks@mail.h-net.msu.edu. -- ****************************************************************** To post to H-ASIA simply send your message to: <H-ASIA@h-net.msu.edu> For holidays or short absences send post to: <listserv@h-net.msu.edu> with message: SET H-ASIA NOMAIL Upon return, send post with message SET H-ASIA MAIL H-ASIA WEB HOMEPAGE URL: http://h-net.msu.edu/~asia/
