H-ASIA December 9, 2007 Response on issues of papers bought online ************************************************************************ From: Flora Sapio <Flora.Sapio@uni-wuerzburg.de> Quoting from Xiaoqun Xiu's post: "But when the colleague confronted the student, the student said that he wrote the paper and the email message was a note to himself as a reminder. As for the fact that the email was from a different email address than his, the student responded that he had two email accounts (this could be literally true, but the email address in question might not be his--would it require a court order to investigate who was the email account's owner?)." Absolutely not. One can check the email headers, and look for the IP addresses (the numeric address that allows to identify and locate every computer connected to the internet) from where the messages originated. If the IP addresses are the same, then it means that both messages originated from the same computer. Chances that both email addresses belonged to the student would then be quite high.
