H-ASIA May 13, 2007 "First Indian War of Independence?" Savarkar or Marx? ************************************************************************ From: Anand A. Yang <aay@U.WASHINGTON.EDU> None of Marx's essays, if I remember right, were titled "The First Indian War of Independence." Rather they were entitled "The Revolt in India." My understanding has always been that Savarkar first used the term although maybe not the locution listed above. Incidentally, another rebellion that has its supporters for being the first war of independence is the so-called poligar (palaiyakkarar) rebellion of 1799-1801. Anand A.
