H-ASIA April 20, 2007 An unusual outcome to a book query (on Joseph Lee, The Bible and the Gun) ************************************************************************ From: ianwelch@coombs.anu.edu.au May I report that Dr Joseph Lee, the author of "The Bible and the Gun,' has been in touch and is very kindly providing me with a copy free of charge. Prof Lee is also astonished at the prices being asked, up to $400 in one instance. It originally sold, he mentioned, for around $80. It is far and away the highest price I have ever seen for a book about China that is not in the rare book category. I buy most of my books from US booksellers (most are not available in Australia) and average two or three a week -- price being critical as I mentioned. Even allowing for expedited postage, they land here at a very reasonable cost. Most times I use Amazon, abebooks, ioba but have picked up some new sources, for which I thank the folk who suggested them. I might mention that, in general, the secondhand booksellers around the world are remarkable for good comparative pricing and honest dealing. Incidentally, I have found New Zealand a veritable treasure trove for good missionary items. I have had so many responses and I am very grateful to everyone. I try to respond to all but just in case, THANKS. Ian Ian Welch Canberra ----------------------------------------- Ed. note: I am delighted to hear this news. Professor Lee is a member of H-ASIA (and member of the faculty at Pace University). This is an unusual example of how H-ASIA can provide unexpected linkages among scholars all over the world. My motto remains: "No strangers on H-ASIA, just friends who haven't yet met!"
