H-ASIA April 17, 2007 China scholars & Cold War/Republican era history -- query re. a movie on the Soong sisters ************************************************************************ From: Vincent K Pollard <pollard@hawaii.edu> Dear Colleagues, I'm trying to understand one part of this discussion and debate. Credits rolling at the end of "The Soong Sisters" (Sung chia huang ch'ao [Hong Kong: Golden Harvest {1999?}]) express appreciation to named PRC collaborators for their assistance in the internationally produced film. Seven years ago, I viewed that 244-minute film for the first time. As I saw it at the time, Chiang Kai-shek (Jiang Jieshi) fared surprisingly well in a movie that had PRC collaboration. Is that example typical, exceptional or perhaps an early indicator of an emerging trend in the historiography of Republican China? Or am I simply inferring too much into the acknowledgement of assistance in the film's credits? Perhaps an H-ASIA colleague knows the history of the film.
