H-ASIA April 17, 2007 China scholars & Cold War/Field tribute to de Bary ************************************************************************ From: Andrew Field <andrew.field@unsw.edu.au> Thomas Bartlett's admonitions are well taken, and in order to prevent further misunderstandings, I've taken the reference to Professor de Bary out of my blog on "Mainland Chinese Historians, US Academia, and Cold War Politics." The title for the photo was meant to be humorous and ironic--I cannot think of Prof de Bary as a "Cold War Warrior" any more than I could imagine him as a world wrestling champion. I have also written an homage to Dr. de Bary in order to make up for the misunderstanding that I somehow "resented" him during my education at Columbia. This could not be further from the truth, and as my blog reveals, he has had a profound impact on my own teaching. While I still hold to the speculation that the legacy of Cold War politics does continue to influence the positioning of historians in our field, particularly at its higher levels, I am extremely grateful for my Columbia education and for all of the great minds whom I studied under while there. My blog on "What Wm. T. de Bary has Taught Me" may be found here: http://shanghaijournal.squarespace.com/journal/2007/4/16/what-wm-t-de-bary-has-taught-me.html [Note: The URL must all be on one line -- RD] Pao fan wei zhou, Andrew Field University of New South Wales ************************************************************************* To post to H-ASIA simply send your message to: <H-ASIA@h-net.msu.edu> For holidays or short absences send post to: <listserv@h-net.msu.edu> with message: SET H-ASIA NOMAIL Upon return, send post with message SET H-ASIA MAIL H-ASIA WEB HOMEPAGE URL: http://h-net.msu.edu/~asia/
