H-ASIA November 2, 2005 WorkshopÆ Religious Revivalism and Political Extremism in Pakistan and Bangladesh, London, December 16, 2005 ********************************************************************** From: Lawrence Saez (<L.saez@lse.ac.uk>) Event: International workshop on religious revivalism and political extremism in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Date: Friday, December 16, 2005. Place: London. The British Association for South Asian Studies (BASAS), in conjunction with the Politics of South Asia Specialist Group of the Political Studies Association (PSA) and the South Asia Programme of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), are proud to announce an international workshop entitled "Religious Revivalism and Political Extremism in Pakistan and Bangladesh." The workshop seeks to draw light on the apparent revival of extremist religious movements in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The workshop aims to understand the extent and magnitude of such a revival and aims to draw some conclusions about its potential impact on democratisation, interethnic relations, and gender in Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as on strategic relations in the region in general. The paper givers and paper topics will include: ·Alexander Evans (Foreign and Commonwealth Office, United Kingdom): Madrassahs in slow motion. ·Ashutosh Mishra (Institute of Defense Studies and Analyses, New Delhi): The Pakistani military and the future of democracy and Islamisation in Pakistan. ·Jeremie Codron (CERI, Paris): The Islamist movements and the national question: Revolutionary ideals and political practice in Bangladesh. ·Burzine Waghmar (School of Oriental and Asian Studies, London): Orientalist remarks on South Asian dhimmis. ·Marion Mueller (Heinrich Böll Foundation, Lahore): Women and the politics of the religious right in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Venue: The workshop will be held on the 4th floor room at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX, on Friday, December 16, 2005 from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs. Cost: Seating for the workshop will be limited. Invitations to attend will be issued on a first come, first served basis. Attendance to the workshop will be free to BASAS members.
