We are pleased to announce: The launch of RCAS North-West. A Regional Centre for American Studies based at the University of Liverpool, UK. Call for Papers Inaugural RCAS Seminar Deadline: 11 February 2013 NEW Regional Centre for American Studies (RCAS North-West) The Regional Centre for American Studies (RCAS) is a new research network established by postgraduate students from the University of Liverpool and the University of Manchester. American Studies researchers work across a broad conceptual and methodological spectrum, which transcends so many different and often discrete academic departments. Our aim is to connect the arts and sciences by providing opportunities for communication and the sharing and development of ideas, research skills and methodologies on a regular and structured basis for those working in American Studies in the North West of England. Our first project is the establishment of a monthly, interdisciplinary seminar series for which we have been awarded funding from the AHRC. This will provide regular opportunities for networking and the presentation of research that is often unavailable to postgraduate students and ECRs in the North-West who can find it difficult to access events based around London and further afield. We will also provide a digital platform which participants can use to disseminate their research, by publishing abstracts, synopses or short articles on our website. Please find further details on our Wordpress site: <rcasnorthwest.wordpress.com>. We can also be found on Twitter: @RCASNorthWest In order to strengthen our network we would like to have representatives in various North-West universities to encourage participation and to help organize events. We would like to invite postgraduate volunteers for these roles. Please email <rcas.nw@gmail.com> if you are interested in this opportunity. Call for Papers We are pleased to invite papers for our monthly seminars to be held throughout term time in 2013. We would like to encourage researchers to explore a wide variety of methodologies under the banner of American studies. Proposals are invited on ANY topic or theme related to the study of the United States from ANY discipline. All papers should include at least a short explanation of the methodology used in research, or alternatively can take a focus on research methods throughout. Sessions will be ninety minutes in duration and consist of two thirty-minute slots (each slot will contain a twenty minute paper and ten minutes for questions). This will be followed by a thirty-minute informal discussion. Events will be held at the University of Liverpool and the University of Manchester but we would like to encourage offers to host seminar sessions from other North-West Universities. Funds are available to subsidize travel for those presenting their work. Brief proposals of no more than 400 words should be submitted by Monday 11th February 2013. The first seminar will be held on the 28th February at the University of Liverpool at 5pm. Please send your proposal for papers to <rcas.nw@gmail.com>. Feel free to distribute this announcement to colleagues and graduate students who may be interested. Andrea Livesey RCAS Director
