CALL FOR PAPERS Migration/Immigration Network SOCIAL SCIENCE HISTORY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONVENTION Palmer House, Chicago, 19-22 November 1998 The Migration/Immigration Network of the SSHA is calling for paper and panel proposals for the November 1998 SSHA convention in Chicago. The network chairs prefer complete panel propsals and they tend to get priority in placement on the program, but we will try to assemble panels or find places in already existing panels for ndividual paper proposals. The proposals should be developed as fully as possible with as much detail as possible: subject and format of the proposed contribution; paper titles; names of all participants with department/discipline, institutional affiliation, address, phone numbers(s), e-mail, and fax; audio-visual needs. We are especially interested in interdisciplinary and comparative panels with topics covering different countries and time periods. The deadline for submissions is 1/15/98, but please submit earlier if possible. We encourage preliminary email discussions with the co-chairs as well as final submissions via email whenever possible. This will make it possible to provide an up to date network web page at http://www.swosu.edu/~nadels/ as we go along. Some of the suggested areas for panels the network discussed at this year's meeting included: New migrants from former Soviet lands, Immigrants and slaveowning, Asylum and refugee status, Pacific migration, Soldiers/military and settlement, Linking internal and international migrations, Various disciplinary perspectives on transnational migrations, Negative aspects of immigrant networks (abuse), Immigrants and food (chinese restaurants in different cultures), Immigrant authors, African-American migration to Chicago, Servants in migration, Ethnic migrations when borders change, Psychology of those who move, Rural migrants to Paris, Immigrant citizenship (constitutional interpretations/ implementation), Temporary migrants This list should be considered suggestive & not exhaustive. We also encourage authors meet commentators book rountables and two organized around the work of James Jackson/Steve Hochstadt and Nancy Green are already being planned. All proposals for this network should be submitted to: Suzanne Sinke Department of History Clemson University Clemson, SC 29634 864) 656-4427 ssinke@clemson.edu and Stan Nadel, Chair Department of Social Sciences Southwestern Oklahoma State U.
