cross-posted from: NUAFRICA: Program of African Studies Mailing List <nuafrica@listserv.acns.nwu.edu> The South African Sociological Association is holding its Congress in Umtata between the 6th-10th of July. The Congress's theme is "Beyond Afro-pessimism: Identity and Development in a Globalising World". The Congress, apart from the life of its usual working groups is attempting to generate a vigorous debate between academics, social movements , NGOs and Government in South Africa. It is also attemting to engage with the intellectual community of the broader continent and, depending on funding with some of the most vibrant social movements in the region. This is a broad invitation to scholars who might find participation in these debates over here in the South an interesting prospect and who would be prepared to consider presenting papers. If such an interest exists please e-mail Dr J. Graaff at graaff@socsci.uct.ac.za or Prof N.Mijere at nmij@getafix.utra.ac.za. So far only the plenaries have been "fixed" which inter alia involve e.g our special guests, Samir Amin, Stuart Hall; e.g. sessions on intellectuals in power which involve a number of senior government representatives and guaranteed sessions on each of the "burning issues" of our local times and so on. If there is further interest we could clatter the cyberspace with a more detailed programme of the working groups and the Congress's subthemes.
