Wednesday, March 26, 2014 Nathan Hedges nth5d@virginia.edu *Call for Papers* - AAA 2014 - Enduring Precursors to Neoliberalism *World Orders before it was New: Enduring Precursors to Neoliberalism * *Call for Papers* Panel, AAA Annual Meeting, Washington DC 3-7 December 2014 We invite paper abstracts for a panel at this year's AAA Annual Meeting. Please send your abstracts (250 words max) to Nathan Hedges at the University of Virginia (nth5d@virginia.edu). This panel examines the contemporary effects of historical precursors to neoliberalism in Sub-Saharan Africa. The restructuring of African economies in recent decades is often viewed as an expression of neoliberal policies, but it may also be understood as preconfigured by the political, economic, and social formations created during earlier periods of global capitalist expansion, such as the transatlantic slave trade, the industrial revolution, and the original "liberal" period that ended in 1929. The papers in this panel analyze the continuing impact of these precursors to neoliberalism, using a *longue durée* perspective that can offer insights into the contemporary neoliberal world. Collectively, they suggest that populations around the world are still dealing as much with the legacies of these mostly forgotten periods as with the effects of the Washington Consensus. This panel will therefore critically engage politics of the present in order to lend insights into current debates and dissident movements concerning neoliberalism. We invite papers that go beyond understandings of contemporary African economic experiences as continued manifestations of neoliberalism and consider other influences, such as the role of state policies, local histories and social logics, and in particular, previous periods of capitalist expansion. -- Nathan T.
