No Affiliation Provided dzo@bisharat.net The West African Rice Development Agency (WARDA) may have info on the extent of cultivation of various kinds of rice in the region. WARDA was centrally involved in the crossing of O. glaberrima and O. sativa as "Nerica," which is said to be popular with farmers for its yield and growth characteristics (and it apparently has been introduced in other regions of Africa). O. glaberrima has a number of varieties, of course, including so-called "floating" varieties well known in the inland Niger delta. Don't have any info on extent of current cultivation, however. For those not familiar with African rice, volume 1 of the Lost Crops of Africa series (National Academies Press, 1996) has a good introductory chapter on it.
