I've only just joined this list due to my personal interest in the slavery issue, including modern slavery; not as a professional academic although I have academic qualifications in history from USyd and have studied some aspects of African history there. I'd be interested if someone could direct me to publications on structural issues. My current social policy research intersects with this. I feel personally touched by issues in relation to the morality of slavery, after having learned I had ancestors in Barbados who owned a sugar plantation and kept slaves (Walcott, Pile, Gordon, Clarke). I've wondered whether they'd lost money in the 1830's which caused them to migrate to Australia. They don't appear to have been wealthy; became shopkeepers; lost all their money in the 1840's depression from issuing too many promissory notes.
