On July 12, Dr. Cyril A. Hromnik wrote: "The American Indians never traded in slaves and, as a result, were never enslaved by the Europeans." This statement is clearly wrong. Whatever the Iberian letrados may have thought, native Americans were systematically enslaved by the Spaniards and the Portuguese across the Caribbean, Brazil, the Andean lands, etc. to provide labor for mines, agriculture, and domestic service.
