I entirely support Paul Landau's "call for free discussion" and endorse his reminder that "a wide range of views is a good thing." "Serious debate, involving people from all backgrounds and points of view" is a very good thing indeed among African Studies researchers. I wonder if there is a "range of views" on some topics that is considered not permissible? If so, what are those topics and why are some views not permissible?
