Thanks Martin for the work you are doing on this locale project. In light of some of the comments you've received offline and Jerry Vogel's reply on this list, I'd like to take the opportunity to share one of my hopes for the locales project that I've brought up with you all previously and discussed briefly. A locale is defined by ISO 639 language codes and ISO 3166 country codes. One of the things that this locales project can produce will hopefully be feedback on the usefulness of the various ISO 639 codes (there are currently 3 active parts to the standard) for locales and localization. Defining "language" is never easy, but the computing environment requires some precision. How to achieve the optimal codes and locales for African languages seems to be an ongoing project.
