Pulaar works for western speakers broadly-speaking, i.e. Mali, Guinea, Senegal. Fulfulde for eastern speakers, i.e. Nigeria, Cameroon, Tchad. There is no consensus that I know of. For what it's worth, I prefer to use Fulbe and Fulfulde in my work because these are most appropriate to the area in which I work. Then follows the obligatory footnote pointing out that there are many alternate terms used. But then I am neither a linguist nor an anthropologist. Mark D.
