This "where were the bibles" question is interesting. It occured to me
that I have seen very few images of missionaries holding bibles, or of
bibles in other photographic contexts in my research on the visual and
material culture of German Protestant missionaries. One would think
that the bible itself as an object would have been endowed with
iconographic power in missionary photography and in the ways in which
missionaries presented and represented themselves. But to my knowledge,
this was not the case. Fascinating....
