<Benjamin.A.Talton@hofstra.edu> We seek papers to join a panel for the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora Conference October 9-12, 2007 in Barbados that explore that external factors including colonialism, tourism, religion, and political discourse feed into or, in some cases helped to create, divisions between the settled forested areas around the large metropolises of coastal West Africa and the hinterland societies of the Sahel - often described or perceived by both coastal/city dwellers and foreign travelers alike as 'unsophisticated' and 'backward'. Potential contributions to this panel might consider factors that have influenced popular, state, and colonial constructions of cultural differences between regions; autochthony; the economic divide; tourist destinations; 'sites of interest'; invention of tradition; ethnic boundaries and diasporic constructions of 'homeland'. Please send a two-page paper abstract and one-page cv to hisbat@hofstra.edu by March 26, 2007. See the following link for more information regarding the conference: http://www.aswadiaspora.org/index.html Thank you, ************************* Benjamin A.
