<tomedwin@mail.rw> The recent discussion of Leopold II and especially the contributions of Claire Dehon and Al Roberts seem to have set my tired brain to working. I seem to remember a cartoon in the Belgian satirical newspaper _Pan_ on the decolonization of Congo. In one panel, someone says to General Janssens, the Flemish commander of the Force Publique, "il faut agir." Janssens replies, "Alors, tageons." (I won't even try to translate.) Congo goes backward in the cartoon, and by the last panel we see Stanley saying, "Dr. Livingstone I presume." Obviously, this tell us almost nothing about Congo. But I find it interesting as an indicator of Belgian attitudes at the time. My questions are: (a) does anyone know of a scholarly discussion of _Pan_ and especially its treatment of decolonization, and (b) are copies of _Pan_ available anywhere (digitized, microfilm...)?
