<plimb@mail.h-net.msu.edu> The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), based in Dakar, Senegal is calling for applications by African researchers in the Social Sciences for the post of Deputy Executive Secretary. This is one of the highest management posts in the CODESRIA Secretariat. The successful candidate is expected to function as part of a team of Secretariat staff. In addition to deputising for the Executive Secretary as may be called upon, the holder of the post will be required, as a primary duty, to serve as the senior programme officer responsible for managing the training and grants department of CODESRIA. The Council's training and grants activities are integral to its core mandate. At present, they include a programme of annual institutes; a thesis-writing programme for young researchers; a summer school on quantitative methods; a programme of advanced research fellowships; and an outreach programme. Plans are already at an advanced stage for the further expansion of the activities of the department with effect from January 2002. The successful candidate will also be called upon to initiate, develop and, where appropriate, manage new projects and programmes; lend support to the research and publications activities of the Council; organise scientific meetings; promote contacts with researchers, professional associations, and regional organisations; and liase with funding organisations under the direction of the Executive Secretary. As part of the conscious effort of the Council always to reflect different aspects of the diversity of the African academy, non- Anglophone candidates, especially those from Francophone African countries, are strongly encouraged to apply for this position. Qualifications: Applicants must: 1. Have a sound university education and post-doctoral experience in a research and/ or research-training environment; 2. Have a good knowledge of CODESRIA and possess a demonstrable ability to mobilise and promote African researchers; 3. Know and be known by the African and international scientific community; 4. Have a demonstrable experience of management in an academic environment; 5. Be experienced in fund-raising and in the management of resources raised; 6. Have a distinguished record of publication in peer- reviewed journals; 7. Be fluent in French or English and have a working knowledge of the other language. Working Conditions: The salary level on offer will depend on the successful applicant's experience and qualifications, and will be comparable to those for similar posts in other international institutions. The contract will be for an initial period of three (3) years, renewable once. How to Apply: Applicants must supply the following documents: 1. A written application; 2. Three reference letters, two of which must come from people living in countries other than the applicant's country of residence. 4. Three or four of the candidate's recent publications. The reference letters in support of candidates must be sealed and sent under separate cover and marked "Confidential Reference".
