dear colleagues the ASA is sponsoring a number of panels over a range of topics. Thus far, the following 5 panels are being suggested. please contact me if you are interested in presenting a paper, and submit the proposal. let me know if you would also be willing to chair, or respond, to the panels: Ken harrow harrow@msu.edu 1.Trauma, Truth, and Reconciliation The cultural production of artists and authors has been marked and haunted by violence, trauma, and conflict.This panel will explore violence in its multiple guises (alienation, conflict, poverty, ecological degradation, illness, sexual abuse, etc), including its representations in literature, art or film. 2.Prison or Exile: Writers, Artists, or Filmmakers under Repression This panel will consider a range of works, including memoirs, prison diaries, testimonial literature, or fictional works that address the repressive state and its agency or apparatuses. 3.Roundtable on Rwanda, 20 yrs later: /The Duty of Memory Project /and its Heirs A panel on the work of those who participated in this project or were influenced by its insistance on testifying to the genocide. Suggested writers to be studied might include Koulsy Lamko, Boubacar Boris Diop, Véronique Tadjo, Tierno Monénemboor others. 4.Ecocriticism and African Cultural Production Ecocriticism is now making its mark on critical approaches to African cultural texts. Critics like Ron Nixon have forged new paths in developing critical approaches marked by ecological thinking, and new novels, films, and works of art are being analyzed through the new lens. This panel will explore aspects of ecocriticism that are being used in the study of African cultural texts. 5.African Women Filmmakers A new generation of women filmmakers is now coming onto the scene with the production of feature length films and transnational critical reception. This panel will allow us to explore some of these new filmmakers.
